This is my standard way of configure computers with mixed os.
I use linux and occasionally WinXPP. I leave the MBR intact for WinXPP Grub installed on boot=/ partion.
sda2 sda3 are / partions. One of them are used.
A new install are always done (instead of update). Old installation is preserved until new is working.
sda5 contains all data that should be maintained.
