AIGLX ('Accelerated Indirect GL X') is an open source project founded by the X.Org Foundation and the Fedora Core Linux community as an effort to simplify graphics rendering through use of modern hardware and software.
AIGLX is being used in many newer distributions such as Fedora Core 6 to power the latest available desktop eye candy. XGL is an alternate method being used to produce these desktop effects. AIGLX is generally regarded as the better approach to the situation because it is officially a part of the X.Org environment whereas XGL is a hack that requires running a second X session on top of the first.
Lack of support on ATI video cards
At the moment ATI's proprietary video driver for linux (fglrx) does not support AIGLX though XGL does work. An update to ATI's linux drivers is expected and hoped for soon. Until then many ThinkPad owners will have to wait or use XGL if possible.
I encourage anyone with news or information regarding support for AIGLX on ATI video cards to contribute to this page.
