AIGLX ('Accelerated Indirect GL X') is an open source project founded by the X.Org Foundation and the Fedora Core Linux community as an effort to simplify graphics rendering through use of modern hardware and software.
AIGLX is being used in many newer distributions such as Fedora Core 6 to power the latest available desktop eye candy. Xgl is an alternate method being used to produce these desktop effects. AIGLX is generally regarded as the better approach to the situation because it is officially a part of the X.Org environment whereas XGL is a hack that requires running a second X session on top of the first.
Status for ATI graphics chips
ATI's proprietary X.org driver, fglrx, currently supports Xgl but not AIGLX. The radeon driver does offer AIGLX (but does not support the newest ATI chips).
