The ThinkPad BIOS has an option to disable the Modem. If you are tempted to do this (seems like a good idea if you never use the modem) don't. If the modem is disabled sound does not work. [Applies to Ubuntu 6.06.1, Edgy-Eft Knot2 and Gutsy Gibbon on ThinkPad R60e] [sound does work in WinXP with modem disabled]
This problem also is present on a Lenovo/IBM Thinkpad T60. Tested with 2.6.21.5-slh-smp-2 on Debian Sid.
Someone managed to get the sound back on Kubuntu Gutsy by upgrading the kernel to 2.6.24.4 and alsa to 1.0.16.
